John Charles Chasteen is an American history professor. He is the author of two popular books Born in Blood and Fire: A Concise History of Latin America and Americanos: Latin America's Struggle for Independence.
John Charles Chasteen was born on December 12, 1955 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; the son of Robert J. and Nina Chasteen.
John Chasteen received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of North Carolina in 1988.
John Charles Chasteen is a Latin American scholar, author, editor, and translator of a broad range of articles and books on Latin American history. Chasteen was one of six contributors to The Problem of Order in Changing Societies: Essays on Crime and Policing in Argentina and Uruguay, 1750-1940. Chasteen and Joseph S. Tulchin edited Problems in Modern Latin American History: A Reader, a compilation of essays from expert contributors who identify and discuss nine separate problem areas in modern Latin America.
In 1988 Chasteen became an assistant professor at Bates College. Two years later he was appointed as a professor at the University of North Carolina, becoming an associate director of the Institute of Latin American Studies in 1994. Since 1997 he has been a director of graduate placement.
Chasteen is currently translating short stories by the Brazilian author Joaquim Machado de Assis.
John Charles Chasteen has been listed as a noteworthy history professor by Marquis Who's Who.
He is the recipient of Fulbright fellowship, 1984-1985, Social Science Research Council fellowship, 1985-1986 and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship, 2000-2001.
