Writer…Editor…Publisher…"Lady in the Locker Room”… “Golf Slut" Susan Fornoff covered all sports and many other topics in a 30-year journalism career. But something keeps bringing her back to golf. Now publisher of GottaGoGolf, the digital media company for women who love the game, Fornoff didn’t even take up golf until she was in her 30s. That was after she published her first book, "Lady in the Locker Room," a memoir of life as a trailblazing woman sportswriter who covered the Oakland A's, the NFL and most other sports for the Sacramento Bee, USA Today and her hometown Baltimore News American beginning in 1979. Then in the late 1990s she began covering golf for the San Francisco Examiner and Chronicle, a stint that included trips to the Masters and several U.S. Opens, among many other professional, amateur and collegiate tournaments. In 2001, she wrote a book with Cori Kenicer (now Brett) called “Northern California Golf Getaways,” published by Amazon Travel Publishing. Fornoff later gained editing and project management skills at the Chronicle as Home & Garden reporter and then as Travel Editor, where she oversaw designers, photographers and also freelance writers in assembling all of the pieces of the weekly Sunday section. In 2009, with the daily newspaper realm shrinking, Fornoff set out to launch her own business, and GottaGoGolf premiered as a digital magazine on Oct. 1, 2010. The magazine gave way to a monthly newsletter, website and blog -- all accessible through GottaGoGolf.com. It was Fornoff’s lively and sometimes irreverent approach to golf that engaged readers of her regular Sunday column at the Examiner & Chronicle, and she continues to advocate widening the appeal of the game with her digital enterprise. Noting that women – a potential market of at least 5 million players – tend to leave the game because it takes too long and is too difficult, she has taken the position that golf needs to change. Anyone who wants the whole story will, of course, have to sign up for 19 holes. In the meantime, visits to www.susanfornoff.com and www.gottagogolf.com will fill in some of the gaps.
