Annamalai Kuppusamy (born 4 June 1984)[citation needed] popularly known as Annamalai IPS, is an Indian politician serving as the BJP President in Tamil Nādu from 8th Jul 2021. He is the youngest BJP President of Tamil Nādu ever.[1] He served as a Civil Servant for 8 years across many locations before entering politics.[2] He is also the Chief Mentor of “We The Leaders Foundation” and Founder & Director of “Core Talent and Leadership Pvt Ltd”.[citation needed]
Annamalai was born on 6th June, 1984 to Kuppusamy and Parameshwari at Karur district in Kongu region of the Tamil Nadu. He hails from an agricultural family and belongs to Gounder community. He is the second child to his parents and has one elder sister.[3]
Annamalai did schooling at Karur district, Tamilnadu. He did schooling from the SRV Higher Secondary School in his hometown. Graduated in mechanical engineering at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu. Post graduated in management, Master of Business Administration with a specialization in marketing and strategy at Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
Annamalai cleared the UPSC exam in 2011 ranking 244 and served as an Indian Police Services officer for 8 years and 1 month.[4] He was Office Trainee at LBSNAA, Mussoorie, Uttaranchal for 4 months between September 2011 and December 2011. Later he was Office Trainee at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad, Telangana for one year and 10 months between December 2011 and September 2013. His first posting after training was as the Assistant Superintendent of Police(ASP) of Karkala, Karnataka where he served for around 15 months from September 2013 to December 2014. He got promoted as Superintendent of Police(SP) of Udupi, Karnataka during January 2015. He served as SP at Chikmagalur, Karnataka between August 2016 and October 2018. When he was transferred from the Udipi to Chikmagalur, several people staged protest against the decision of the state government. He was later promoted as Deputy Commissioner of Police(DCP) of South Bangalore in October 2018. [5]
Annamalai was popularly known as the ‘Singham’ of Karnataka for his "upright", "honest" and a "brave" behaviour.[6]. During his 8 years police service, he spearheaded many awareness drive against drug abuse and sale of tobacco, shutting down several illegal liquor shops.[7] Even now many millions of UPSC aspirant youth consider Annamalai as their role model. In 2017, Annamalai called for a peace committee meeting in Baba bundangiri and invited representatives of Muslim and Hindu communities to address the communal tension that was growing massively when a group of miscreants vandalised the Dattatreya Bababudan Swamy Dargah.[8] He brought the situation under his control and solved the issues smoothy without any damage to both sides. “This was the first such meeting held at the place. We had invited the organisers of the Datta Jayanti programme and leaders of the Muslim community. Three main organisers of the programme joined us, while there were many Muslim leaders. We took them to the burial ground to show that the damage caused was minor and was repaired within a short time. The exercise was to clear the misunderstandings among the people over the incidents that happened on that day. They were also happy with the police action following the incident. They appreciated the police for taking immediate measures to stop violence in the city following the incident”,. - Annamalai said. [4]
Annamalai resigned from the post of Deputy Commissioner of Police of Bengaluru and left his long-served profession of IPS officer.[9] He took this massive decision in May 2019.[6] In his resignation letter, Annamalai said it was not a sudden decision but a well-thought-out one rooted in a 2018 trip to Kailash Mansarovar. The death of a respected senior helped the realisation take a deeper hold.[7]
Annamalai resigned from his IPS service to help groom leadership at grassroot level. This led him to the founding of “We The Leaders Foundation” during March 2020, an NGO with a focus on three areas, organic farming, job-focused skill development and dialogue for development.[10] He is Co-founder and one of the Director of “CoRE Talent and Leadership Development Private Ltd”. He is also Consultant in Micro Tech Pvt Ltd Tamil Nādu.[5]
Annamalai joined the BJP party in the presence of party national general secretary P Muralidhar Rao and Tamil Nadu state president L. Murugan in Delhi on 25th August 2020 (Tuesday).[11] Within days of joining the BJP party, on 30th August 2020 Annamalai was made one of the vice-presidents of the Tamil Nadu State unit. [12] Within a year on 8th July 2021, Annamalai has been appointed Tamil Nadu BJP State President. He successor to L. Murugan. [13]
Annamalai contested in Aravakurichi Constituency in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Election, and garnered a vote share of 38.9% to rise as the first runner-up in the constituency[14]
He got married to Akila Swaminathan whom he met during his college days at PSG. They have one son and a daughter. [15][3] Annamalai is the follower of Sri Ramakrishna Mutt and its head Srimat Swami Gautamananda Ji Maharaj.[citation needed]
During his tenure in Udupi-Kannada, Annamalai developed a deep interest in Islam, and decided to study the religion to “understand what led to the misinterpretation of religious texts and caused widespread radicalisation”.[12]
“I studied the Quran and Hadith with the help of the religious scholars. I tried to understand the philosophy. It helped me understand the psyche behind terror organisations like the Indian Mujahideen, SIMI and ISIS that had spread its tentacles around the Bhatkal-Kundapura region,” - Annamalai said. [16]
Annamalai has authored a book named, ‘Stepping Beyond Khaki: Revelations of a real-life Singham'. He has tried to bring to notice that even police officers are humans and must be treated so through his book.[17]
